After Your Weight Loss Surgery
After your weight loss surgery you will receive in-depth instructions from your surgeon, this will outline how to care for yourself after your bariatric procedure. These instructions will include information on medication dosage, as well as diet and follow-up appointments. Depending on your procedure and your overall health, you will likely be able to return to work 2 to 4 weeks after surgery, and will be able to perform moderate levels of activity 3 to 6 weeks afterward.
After your surgery, you will continue a liquids-only diet. Your stomach will hold approximately 1 ounce before it will feel full. In the weeks after your surgery, you will progress from liquids with protein supplementation, to soft or pureed foods, to “regular” food.
You will be encouraged to continue to attend your support group, to meet with your nutritionist and to maintain your exercise program. In fact, you will be encouraged to try to walk a little on the day of your surgery, increasing the distance a little at a time in the days that follow.
To get the most out of your surgery, we will help you train yourself to eat properly to reach your weight goals. For example, we encourage you to eat several small meals throughout the day, to keep yourself from feeling overly hungry.
Bariatric Surgery will be done at Lovelace Westside Hospital. Plan to go home 2-4 hours after surgery, for Lap-Band. For sleeve and bypass procedures, there is a 48=72 hour hospital stay. Please arrange to have someone drive you home and stay with you after surgery.
